Pincho of the Week: Tortilla de Patata

tortilla de patata

What’s the most famous pincho in Spain? Probably tortilla de patata (Spanish potato omelette). You can find this in basically every bar and it’s a staple in the Spanish diet. For example, when some of my preschool students play house, they flip tortillas in their plastic frying pans. To put it mildly, I am obsessed with this dish. I eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and if several days go by and I haven’t had a slice of tortilla, I go into a mild panic and head to my favorite tortilla bar, Porto Vecchio. If I have time, I even make them on the weekends, though flipping the perfect tortilla still eludes me. I posted a recipe last year for making tortilla de patata, if you are feeling adventurous in the kitchen. They are actually not that difficult to make.

Thanks to one of my students, I discovered the BEST tortilla in Logroño a few months ago, served up perfectly at Porto Vecchio. There are few shops around town, and they are famous in this area. Most people order a whole tortilla to take home for an easy dinner, and in the evenings there are long lines and you have to grab a number. It’s also popular to order whole tortillas there for parties or nights out, basically the Spanish equivalent of picking up a pizza. “Gotta go and pick up the tortilla, honey. Be back soon!” And the best part of Porto Vecchio’s tortillas? They serve them with the most incredible spicy red pepper sauce. So whether you get the plain old tortilla like me, or the decadent ham and cheese stuffed one (smothered in mayo, YUCK), you are guaranteed to love it, I promise! And don’t forget the special sauce!

Have you ever tried tortilla de patata? What’s your country’s staple dish?

  1. Restaurante Pascual makes a mean tortilla in Burgos and they always have a great variety! It’s a 15 minute walk from the city center to San Pedro and San Felices…but worth it! 🙂

  2. Que rico!! The only time I’ve had tortilla de patatas here is I went to my Spanish friend’s house for dinner – sooo delicious! I had leftovers in bocadillo form the next day 🙂
