Solo female travel ✈️ Lonely Planet author & correspondent 🌎 Polar expedition guide ❄️ “one of the most powerful women in travel” Condé Nast Traveler

It’s been Fat Bear Week for brown bears in Alask

It’s been Fat Bear Week for brown bears in Alaska as they beef up for winter. I just had to share the fattest polar bear I’ve ever seen. Spotted earlier this summer near the east coast of Greenland, this absolute chonker didn’t even move as we sailed by. I’ve never seen one so round.

What do you think? Chime in! I’ve polled so many people and guides and this guy takes the top spot for fattest bear.

Swipe to see more, the last photo is of a “normal” bear for comparison 🐻‍❄️

PS this is not AI content, not sure why it’s labeled that way 🤔 I swear the bear was this fat; I’ve got witnesses!

How much do I love Newfoundland? Let me count the ways ❤️ I never thought this corner of Canada would steal my heart but man Newfoundland is so special. Can’t wait to return in a few weeks again with @adventure.canada

Look who stopped by Wānaka on his way south to Fiordland 🥹

I couldn’t let Lil’ Puku pass through without showing him the lake and, of course, our most famous tree.

He’s travelling from Cape Reinga to Fiordland to campaign for kiwi pukupuku, the smallest and second-rarest of New Zealand’s five kiwi species. Only around 2,100 remain, all descended from just five birds moved to Kāpiti Island in 1912.

After a decade of predator control led by RealNZ on Ao-ata-te-pō Cooper Island in Tamatea Dusky Sound, plans are now underway for kiwi pukupuku to return to Fiordland.

A tiny bird with a very big comeback ahead of it. Vote kiwi pukupuku for Bird of the Year!

I first met @samneilltheprop a decade ago filming a NBC special in New Zealand. Just down from the road from me is his winery, @twopaddocks, one of my favorite places with some of the greatest people. It took me a bit but wanted to pay homage to Sam and his incredible legacy, because honestly? It just sucks so much to lose him; he was the most amazing human. Two Paddocks is a magical vineyard (with magical Pinot Noir) built up over a long time in the most beautiful part of Central Otago, a place I always felt welcomed even just to park up under a fruit tree or go for walks. Sam’s work in conservation is what always stood out to me the most. We used to yarn about saving birds and protecting the natural world. Even now he was fighting to prevent mining in our local region. Ugh this hurts. Sam, we miss you!

Who is Young Adventuress?

Hi, I'm Liz, and I got my first taste for traveling when I was 16 years old. On my own, 12 years and 50 something countries later, my wanderlust has only grown and the list of countries I want to visit longer. After living in Spain for the past few years and returning home for a stint, I then quit my job and moved to New Zealand and I've been here ever since. Follow my misadventures as I wander, eat, and photograph my way around the world
