Grise Fjord’s name means “pig inlet” in Norwegian because when polar explorer Otto Sverdrup visited here in 1900, he thought that the walrus in the area sounded like pigs.

In Inuktitut the name for Grise Fiord is is Aujuittuq, “a place that never thaws.”
.
The average yearly temperature here is −16.5 °C.

Grise Fiord has a population of about 150.
.
Grise Fiord was created by the Canadian Government in 1953 when they forced Inuit families from Quebec to relocate here to assert sovereignty in the High Arctic during the Cold War.

I didn’t realize how much I craved community until I stepped aboard the Ocean Endeavour last summer with @adventure.canada. A lifelong loner, I’ve always preferred to walk my own path, to travel solo, and do my own thing. While I have so many amazing friends in my life, when it came to my work, I was very solitary.
.
But once I made my dream come true of becoming a polar guide on expedition ships, I quickly realized what I loved the most was the people. Adventure Canada feels like my family. I could sit down with any of the team and feel happy and content. We all have each other’s backs and are so close. I didn’t realize how much I longed for that until I finally had it. Trust me, no one was more surprised than me, a proud introvert. I’m so happy that life has led me in this direction ❤️ and 📸 by the incredible @nicole.holmann

My friends over at the @antarcticheritage have opened applications for their next Inspiring Explorers programs which will go to the Ross Sea side of Antarctica with @heritageexpeditions following in the footsteps of the great explorers.

This is such a cool opportunity, marking the 10th anniversary of the Inspiring Explorers Program. The guardians of some of the most important relics and historic huts from the golden age of polar exploration, the AHT are offering the chance for some of you guys to get down to one of the most remote corners of the world.
