The summer of 2009 I was living the dream studying at the National Library in Madrid. Before heading home in August, I hopped, skipped and jumped my way back to eastern Europe from Venice, Slovenia, and down into Croatia. I had been hearing about Croatia for a while on traveling blogs, hailing it “the new Greece.” I just thought it looked stunning so I decided to see for myself what all of the fuss was about.
After being disappointed by some of the inland cities, like Zagreb, we decided to ferry ourselves out to one of the beautiful islands, called Hvar. I was not prepared for the delicious, fresh seafood, turquoise clear water, sprawling lavender fields and beautiful ancient towns that awaited us.
I snapped this Friday Photo of the main harbor at midday with the hot July sun beating down on the crystal clear water and white, toy-like boats mingling with million dollar yachts. The water is so clear and clean here that you can see the shadow of the boats reflecting 20 feet down on the sandy bottom.
We made the most of our time in Hvar sailing around the islands, diving off the boats, eating freshly caught fish and seafood, and trying to get tan. If you are looking for an off the beaten track beach vacation, I suggest visiting some of Croatia’s islands. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.
Have you ever been to Croatia? What is your favorite European beach destination? Where do you enjoy going to the beach?
