I just got home from visiting my friend Liz in Bilbao (from Liz en España) for the weekend. After reading all about the Basque Country (Pais Vasco) on her blog and hearing about some new pincho bars she’s discovered, I had to see (eat) for myself. We all met up with Lauren of Spanish Sabores who was in town for the weekend for a blogger night of pinchos and wine.
Now you have heard me go on and on about pinchos in Logroño on my blog and hopefully have enjoyed some of my favorites highlighted on my “Pincho of the Week” project. I have decided to branch out and feature one from the homeland of Pais Vasco, since pinchos, or better yet, pintxos in Basque, originated there.
The second bar she took us to serves specializes in cheese pinchos; Bar Gaztandegi makes all their own cheeses too! It was hard to pick a favorite from the ones I tried, but I think I have to go with crepes de queso con hongos y salsa del pimiento del piquillo (cheese and mushroom crepes with a red pepper sauce) AMAZING! And at €1,90, how can you say no (to at least one)? The runner-up for favorite cheese pincho had to be the puerro relleno de crema de queso con bacon (leeks stuffed with bacon and cream cheese). I am already counting the days to when I can return to Bilbao and try even more of these delicious cheese pinchos!
Sorry for the less-than-stellar photographs. I was in a bit of a hurry (sprinting across Logroño) to catch the bus that I forgot my fancy pants camera at home. I had to make do with my iphone. Bad blogger.
Have you ever tried pintxos in Bilbao or the Basque Country? What is your favorite?
Find it: Bar Gaztandegi, Maestro García Rovero, 10 Bilbao

I love whole Spain but Basque Country simply took my heart from the first minute! I so wouldn’t mind to live there and food is one of the biggest reasons of my love ha ha ha
This place was so delicious!
I know! Liz gets major props! The pinchos at this place were AMAZING!!
I tried the puerro at this bar and it was fantastic! Major kudos to Liz for keeping us in the know.
