So summer is officially here! School is out, and it’s in the 90’s everyday. Everyone is out enjoying the sun (or getting sunburned, like me!) I am living on the beach in southern Spain (ok not one of my typical summers, but no complaints here!) I left Córdoba on June 1st and moved into a friend’s apartment in Málaga for the month! But now my time is winding down, and I leave in two days for Switzerland and my best friend’s wedding! I’ve got my dress, a tan, and legal permission to leave the country (phew!); I am ready to go!
As much as I love living in Spain, I’ve had a strong feeling of nostalgia for last summer, which was by far the best summer of my life! I will never forget the summer of 2010! I graduated college in May, and I moved into a big old blue house in downtown Amherst, Massachusetts, with the most awesome group of people from UMass. I worked for Fund for the Public Interest, canvassing towns all over MA raising money for the environment. That job was absolute hell, but I survived, and I left with a good new group of friends.
My summer was crazy late night parties with my housemates on Gray Street. It was grabbing some pizza and cold beers at the Spoke after work. It was getting lost all over Massachusetts looking for the next big donation. It was hanging out at the Bookmill and Amherst Coffee on the weekends. It was eating late night take-out with W on the grubby old couch watching True Blood on Sunday nights. It was skinny dipping with R and S at Puffers Pond on the 4th of July. It was was watching Spain win the World Cup in Boston with L. It was hanging out in NYC with J on the weekends, binging on late brunches, napping in Central Park, and going to the US Open to see Federer win. It was getting mimosas and big brunches at the Lone Wolf with F. It was going back to VA to see C get married (same C who is having another ceremony in Switzerland next weekend). It was grilling burgers and eating corn on the cob smothered in butter on the back porch in MD with my dad and sister. It was M visiting from Chicago and revisiting campus at MHC. It was playing with the baby cows and eating delicious ice-cream at Flayvors. It was getting ready for Spain. It was the best summer of my life, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for me this summer!
What does summer mean to you? Do you remember your best summer?
